Background
This was the final project in our editorial design class and was the largest document we created in the program (30 pages). We were provided all the content, images, and style guide but needed to design the layout and make sure the content was consistent and in the correct sections of the report.
Challenge
The challenge for this project was the volume of content that needed to be managed. I created a folding dummy of the report (a handmade mock-up) which really helped me visualize the layout. This was especially important because the report was saddle-stitched for output, which requires the page count to be a multiple of four.
Process
I tried to be really strategic when setting up the InDesign document; creating effective parent pages so I could beĀ efficient and make changes very easily. Dealing with the volume of content for the project was overwhelming at first, but I found the best thing to do is put all the content into the document as soon as possible. Having all the on the page makes it much easier to manage and arrange.
Results
The annual report turned out nicely and I got good feedback on the final product. My initial planning work really helped simplify the design process. Overall, this project was a great learning experience for creating and managing large documents.
